ILT Support Mentors

What are they?

The growth of ILT in education is huge at present. The main aim is to encourage teachers to use ICT in their teaching and learning in every subject across the curriculum to:

  • increase motivation in children;
  • increase efficiency in the learning process ;
  • increase effectiveness in the learning process ;
  • learn things we would not learn if we didn't use it;
  • allow and encourage lifelong learning to take place;
  • make learning a desirable thing.
ILT Support Mentors would work in schools to support this happening. Their main role would be to:
  • support teachers with existing day to day queries about ICT (they, in turn, will receive support from the CLC);
  • identify and organise - with the co-operation of the CLC - training needs and courses;
  • keep up to date with new technologies and ensure the smooth introduction of them into their school;
  • develop their own skills and be prepared to cascade any training on to other members of staff who need it.

What kind of person are we looking for?

You need to be energetic, enthusiastic, have good interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn new skills. You don't need to be an IT buff! But you do need to be interested in learning more about ICT and how it can be used in any learning process. The idea is to develop your skills with a view to you developing those around you.

What would I need to commit myself to?

A short induction session if you haven't been in the role before. This will be approximately an hour long and will take place in a twilight session in the first half term.

You'll be the main CLC contact for any new developments and other school staff will be approaching you for help with ILT. With all of this you will have the full support of staff from the CLC who will always be just an email or phone call away

In June / July 2004 we will re-group and go through an evaluation process.

Finally, you will be asked to write a short report outlining the benefits and pitfalls of the scheme as you've experienced it and to give suggestions for improvement.

What are the benefits for me?

If you don't already have access to a PC or laptop to do your own development work you will be given one for the year.

Tremendous personal development and the opportunity to be at the forefront of new developments in ILT.

The opportunity to develop the use of ILT in your own teaching and to see the benefits at first hand.
